Branding Primitive campaign?

Branding OPINION on VOLKSWAGEN
Marc Babej has a pretty interesting interview with author, Douglas Rushkoff, over at Being Reasonable. When asked what, in his opinion, is wrong with advertising, Rushkoff offered Volkswagen as a prime example.

"Hiring a new ad agency is not going to save VW. The problem is not that they are off brand message, or that their ads are wrong. The problem is that VWs are no longer VWs! VW products communicated an authentic simplicity - a minimalism, a Bauhaus economy of material. Now they have cushy seats and lots of plastic - just like other cars. VW also offers a big SUV and the Phaeton, a luxury sedan. The Phaeton has been such a dismal failure that VW has pulled it off the U.S. market. Mini came in and ate their lunch by making cars more essentially VW than the current crop of VW’s. So what does VW do? Hire Mini’s ad agency!"

In Volkswagen's case, sure. No argument on this end. VW has indeed turned its back on its heritage and Mini has been only too happy to pick it out from VW's corporate dumpster.

But with all due respect to Rushkoff's premise that companies have gotten so swept up in branding that they've taken their eye off the ball in terms of their own products, well, what about it? Rightly or wrongly, there are an awful lot of companies out there right now that are skating along just fine on nothing more than a wing and an image.

That sucks for the consumer. And in the long run, it might well suck for the company. But it is what it is. The power of branding has never been more powerful. And with the proliferation of more and more new ways of projecting that power, the problem of style over substance isn't going away any time soon.

Actually, Hadji, I have not yet had a chance to read KTH. Looking forward to it over the holidays. Similar experience with Mercedes?

The author's main argument is that VW has turned its back on its heritage. I think that they've simply turned their back on their core consumer -- People with not a lot of money, who want an inexpensive car. I used to own a VW. Now I own an Audi. I grew up. But it seems now, VW has grown up, too. I bought a well-equipped Jetta in 1996 for 17K out the door. Now, you can't get one for anywhere near that. And if you do, it looks like "a cheap Jetta" in comparison to the loaded up version. VW used to make cars that looked essentially the same across the trim spectrum. Not true anymore. VW used to make cars that had great prices and offered a much cooler car than the competition. But now, they make mini-Audis, without a mini price. But something that can't be overlooked is that my Jetta was a complete piece of shit. As was my sister's. As was my roommate's from freshman year. VWs sucked. For a long time. Despite what Bernbach would have had us think. Their quality is poor. Until now. So now they make better, more expensive cars and they're losing ground.

They've just forgotten who their customers are. If someone can afford an Audi, they won't buy a VW. I didn't.

The problem is that they didn't learn Psychology....
Most of branding campaign use only unsystematic unproven primitive theories to direct their actions;
for instance, who is their target market? their end user consumer?
What about the design engineer?
or Authorized dealer? or even their front line sales personeel?
Each of them has their own groupthink that is no way identical than the ad master think...
Try GESTALT psychology approach instead....

Unofficial Myspace taboo.....

GUNTHER BULETTIN.....
May 18, 2006 11:48 PM
Subject: my space regulation...fun stuff but true
Body: 1. Delete Tom... he's not your friend, and I promise you that he won't notice if you delete him.
2. Never under any circumstances is it acceptable to say "thanks for the add" unless of course you're a dingle-berry.

Definition of DINGLEBERRY:

A. a small piece of feces stuck in the hairs around the anus after defacation.

B. a person who is perhaps intelligent but engages in annoying behavior.

ie: That professor just assigned a 25-page paper, what a dingleberry!

3. WHEN Putting a damn picture up.

Please Note the Following:

A.) Make sure the picture is of you and not Gumby.

B.) DO NOT post pictures of you when you were thin years ago, when you look nothing like that now!!

C.) DO NOT take poses of yourself to make you look like a model unless you are one.

D.) I am sorry, but you are not Britney Spears or Brad Pitt!! So DO NOT put up their picture in place of yours.

E.) DO NOT ever post pictures and say "OMG, I'm so ugly" because if you were, you wouldn't post them.

F.) DO NOT post pictures of someone else pretending to be them. That is sad and pathetic. Period.

4. "You're" is a contraction meaning "you are." "Your" is a pronoun meaning "belonging to you." Similarly, "they're" is a contraction meaning "they are," "their" is a pronoun meaning "belonging to them," and "there" is an adjective describing a location that is away from "here."

5. ROFL, LOL, LMAO, ROFLMAO are things a retarded monkey would say. It has no use in communication between two mentally competent human beings.

6. Myspace will never figure out if you failed to repost a bulletin. Therefore your profile will not be deleted. Although maybe it should be if you're mentally incompetant enough to believe it.

7. The Trifecta is a perfectly good reason to celebrate. (Trifecta- new comment, new message, and new friend request at the same time.)

8. If you put up a fake job title with $100,000 salaries, someone from your work is going to find your page. So let's stop with this "executive consultative assistant of regional administrative operations" vomit. You're an everyday paper pushin' secretary. FACE IT.... That is why TOM went to college; to be better than YOU.

9. Bands do not belong on your top 8 unless you are personally acquainted with the members of the band and you regularly spend time in their physical presence. I like the Dropkick Murpheys, but that doesn't make them one of my 8 best friends.

10. Deleting someone off your top 8 is not the ultimate insult that you can bestow upon someone. If someone cheats on you, taking them off your top 8 does not make it even. Having sex with their best friend/ roommate/ new girlfriend/ new boyfriend/ sister/ brother/ mother does.

11. Forwarding a mentally incompetent message that says that you will have bad luck or never have sexual intercourse again if you don't forward it is just plain rude. It's like if your neighbor's dog had a bowel movement in your yard, and you call your friend and invite them over, and then when they get there hand them a paper towel and ask them to pick up your neighbor's dog's shit. Fucking stop it.

12. If you constantly post comments on someone's site and they never comment back, that means THEY DON'T PRETEND TO LIKE YOU. Get the clue, because Alex Trebek sure won't give it to you.

13. If you're ugly, stop acting like you don't know it. The half-naked poses or junk in the trunk poses aren't fooling anyone.

14. Nobody cares about threats over the internet. Don't try to act hardcore with the keyboard.
15. Making 10+ bulletins a day about how you have new pictures or some life altering news and begging people to comment on them shows how you're starving for attention. Make the bulletin once or twice if you have to, and those who actually care will comment or respond.

16. Jr. high & high schoolers who have MySpace and look like sluts or "gangsters" (REAL gangsters don't surf the internet, you dumbfuck), go somewhere else because nobody wants you here. Once again... go climb a tree and be certain to fall out of it.

17. Go to SCHOOL, Go to Work, or For God Sakes Go Hang out with your friends!!!
MYSPACE will be here when you get back!!

Facing 100,000,000,000 dollars online AD?

BOURGEOIS IN FETIZ CONFUSION...:)
Well, I don't know if I have ever bought anything I didn't need, either from an ad or period. Well, maybe when I was 18 I was kinda addicted to buying chic clothing but I realized I can put together chic clothing in a different way original and cheap and recyled...I liike to be comfortable and homey like everyone but I don't find that there is much in the physical world that feeds the actual craving people have when they desire those expensive products. If you talk to impulse shoppers, and god knows a lot of my gal pals have suffered fromt hat and actually guys...suddenly buying a citizen watch because they felt like James Bond, to get home and feel really depressed and down, women buying prada shoes then get home and feeling empty and deranged. Lonely withdrawal etc. ha ha. So its sad really. I find families, and lots of them in blogland that have discovered NOT buying and spending has changed their entire lives, they hang out with each other more often play with the kids they found on so many levels their life changed when they made a pledge to not buy anything for six months aside from food and emergency supplies(aspirin socks) They found they didn't use half the stuff they already owned and landed up having garage sales and organizing their house so they were even more happy with less clutter.

Now, I admit I did see some ads recently that I really liked...lets see I'll try to add them here...warning I am a nerd these aren't as sexy as ads about beer although, I suppose I enjoy beer ads, I'm canadian after all. But I never drink beer that is advertised on tv. Boring! Who drink corporate beer...oh rats I drink heneken and Stella if I'm in a fix, wellsee there ya go.

here...I loved the ad on side for the bag attached to eaves pipes. I thought that was cool. I liked the flip flops too.

Not quite an "ad" but it is packaging, which is sort of an ad
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4313772690011721857&q=ipod+packaging

of course, it is on "google".
I was surprised to go to
http://www.apple.com
recently to have it start with an ad.
Of course, they might no longer be there now but they are still here
http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/

I've been traveling a bit so haven't seen these. I have to admit I watched all of them, and a couple of them more than once :-)
Sent them to friends too, most of them are mac owners at this point though . . .

Posted by: ken | May 9, 2006 8:04:04 PM

OH, the one guy, on the viewers left, in the Apple ads looks a little like Bill Gates, which is why I mentioned them. Of course someone will undoubtedly bring up the Apple PC share is somewhere in the same neighborhood as the BMW car share - so where has advertising got them (well, OK, then there is the stock price comparison . . .)
Good brand image and recognition, plus 2.95$ will get you a good cup of coffee. :-)
(Full disclosure - yes I have 4 Apple laptops and 4 ipods in my house of 4 people but really, it wasn't the advertising :-) )

Posted by: ken | May 9, 2006 8:10:53 PM

Ken, your "disclosure" just cracked me up you're a riot. 4 computers, wow. I just got a computer for the first time my boyfriend and I just got it in Feb. And I'm old its like weird I never had one, I've been on bbs and "electronic mail" for twenty years, harvard paleontolgy (ape feuds central) bbs and used puters through universities and military and public all these years. I am like a mennonite when I shop...analyse the whole how many machines do I want in my house etc. I hate vaccuums and dishwashers and microwaves! I'm not a Luddite, just like a minimum of possessions left over from when I was hooked up with the Dalai Lama, that pirate! and like to live thin. More possessions means more housework and slaving for "the man" heh heh but true. But I bet your family is nice and peaceful and gets along like a charm since you're not competeing for 'puter time. Those mac commercials are delightful and yes he does look like Bill Gates. I think you might be onto something Ken with the cup of coffee idea. I wonder how much brand image does matter sometimes...because with something like BMW...what caused it to be the representative of all that is evil in the world?(nazis, corporate whores, yuppies, self serving drivers, ) They became this symbol in the 80's right? It wasn't throguh ads was it and I missed something...? And why on earth would any human drive one and associate themselves with all that evil and lack of imagination? If I was a business executive I would not hire anyone who drove a bmw, sign of YAWN!

i like google's ads.

when i'm contemplating a purchase and use google to do research, i often click the ads they steer my way. but not when i'm using google to locate info that has nothing to do with buying anything.

which makes google's ads so very different from ads in a shelter magazine or in vanity fair, where they're so well-executed that i rather enjoy reading them. as a general rule, google's ads interest me only in terms of price and ease of purchase, with an ad from vanity fair, say, being the reason i'm interested in the product/service in the first place.

amazing that grant's musings on advertising and its role in our lives attracts readers who claim not to be big consumers and/or who claim not to be influenced by advertising.

Posted by: auto | May 10, 2006 12:37:28 PM

I'm a bit of a skeptic on most advertising. It's effectiveness is hard to verify, and the few scientific attempts to do so have come up with uncomfortable results. On the other hand, firms don't have many other choices for attracting attention, and for new products or services advertising is an unparalleled way to spread awareness.
Google's lack of expertise in creating ad copy need have no bearing on their ability to provide a technology platform to those who do. What does Google have to do with the content of current Google ads? Basically, nothing, as far as I can tell. Advertisers decide what to put in the space available.
More intrusive, dynamic visual advertising on the internet also may be a pipe dream. Unlike TV, which is a passive medium where we "see what's on," the computer is a controlled window on cyberspace where we search for things of interest. The last thing most people want is to have their intended views obstructed or distracted from by intrusive ads. If I had some kind of multimedia extravaganza going off on the side of this blog (or, even worse, blocking the text for 30 seconds), I would find it an annoyance and would be less likely to come back.

Subject: WHOS IN CHARGE
Body: Who's in charge?
Body: All the organs of the body were having a meeting,

trying to decide who was the one in charge.

"I should be in charge," said the brain ,

"Because I run all the body's systems,

so without me nothing would happen."

"I should be in charge," said the blood ,

"Because I circulate oxygen all over

so without me you'd all waste away."

"I should be in charge," said the stomach,"

Because I process food and give

all of you energy."

"I should be in charge," said the legs,

"because I carry the body wherever

it needs to go."

"I should be in charge," said the eyes,

"Because I allow the body to see

where it goes."

"I should be in charge," said the rectum,

"Because I'm responsible for

waste removal."

All the other body parts laughed at the rectum

And insulted him, so in a huff,

he shut down tight.

Within a few days,

the brain had a terrible headache,

the stomach was bloated,

the legs got wobbly,

the eyes got watery,

and the blood Was toxic.

They all decided that the

rectum should be the boss.

The Moral of the story?

The asshole is usually in charge !!

Yes...
Facial structure could draws personality; Our mind n body is not just like robot or computers; it is like "Vegetation"; when you chose one emotive action succeed n work it out frequently is like u cut a couple trees n let one specific tree to grow dominantly.......In your case, u feel smiling is your best emotive weapon against others; so u let your mouth widen outproportionately from average people....Since u always win with this weapon, your ego arise unproportionately. This tactic happens since childhood n u not realize it...:)

interseting analogy... i think i'm sensitive... but my room is pretty messy... but yeah if anyone moves something I usually notice... I do like harmony... but i'd probably get really annoyed if someone called me bourgeios... and I guess it's hard for me to totally forgive people who screw me over.. but i think that's a general condition.

but that was interesting! did you base it on astrology?
